The Association of National and International Real Estate Agencies (ABINI) warns the public about recent attempts at fraud and identity theft detected in the real estate sector, in which criminals pose as professional agents to obtain personal data through malicious links.

The warning comes after a case reported by a company associated with ABINI, Engel & Völkers, in which a person interested in a property was contacted by a supposed estate agent. Under the pretext of providing information about a property, they were asked to download a link or application containing spyware, allowing unauthorised access to personal data on their mobile phone.

ABINI President Daniel Arenas has pointed out that ‘this type of fraud is particularly worrying because it exploits citizens’ trust in recognised brands and professionals. We want to make it clear that professional estate agencies do not ask you to download applications or links to view properties, nor do they ask for personal data through unofficial channels.’

ABINI confirms that the incident has been reported to the Civil Guard and stresses the importance of prevention and information to avoid further cases.

The association recommends that citizens:

  • Do not download links, applications, or files sent by unverified individuals.
  • Always confirm the agent’s identity by contacting the agency’s official office directly.
  • Be wary of messages or calls that create urgency or pressure to act quickly.

‘At ABINI, we work to ensure professionalism, transparency and security in the Balearic real estate sector. Collaboration between associations, agencies and authorities is key to curbing this type of crime,’ added Arenas.
